The World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF) and the Confederação de Karate-Dô Tradicional Brasileira (CKTB) are proud to invite you to a historic week celebrating the martial art that unites tradition, discipline, and spirit.

From November 18th to 22nd, 2025 , three unforgettable events will take place in Natal, RN, Brazil :

Who was Gichin Funakoshi?

All karate practitioners, especially those who follow Shotokan, know him.
In almost every dōjō, there is at least one photograph of him hanging on the wall, along with a frame displaying the dōjō kun, and often the twenty principles that guide the practice. His image is present, his name is spoken with respect, and his legacy is repeated in ceremonies and training sessions.

Everyone knows who he is. But… do they really know him?

Gichin Funakoshi (1868–1957) is regarded as the father of modern karate . Born in Shuri, Okinawa, he transformed a once-secret martial art, known as tōde, into a universal discipline: karate-dō.

He was not only a master of combat techniques but also a poet, teacher, and scholar who saw karate not as an instrument of violence, but as a way of life. His guiding principle, carved on his tombstone at Engaku-ji Temple in Kamakura, encapsulates his philosophy:

What is the book about?

Walking Upright is not an academic biography nor a technical manual. It is a narrative that blends documented history, reconstructed scenes, and respectfully crafted fiction to bring the atmosphere of that era to life.

The book traces Funakoshi’s journey from his frail and sickly childhood in Okinawa, through his training with masters such as Ankō Azato and Itosu, to his triumph in Tokyo, where he turned karate into a global discipline.

Beyond the historical milestones, the work seeks to convey the spirit of personal growth that Funakoshi embodied: true victory does not lie in defeating others, but in mastering oneself.

Languages and accessibility

The book was originally written in Spanish and professionally translated into English to reach a wider audience. With the support of artificial intelligence tools , versions in other languages are also being developed, making this story accessible to readers around the world.

The World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF) is proud to announce the official launch of its renewed corporate identity, effective October 1st, 2025. This new chapter marks a significant step forward in strengthening our global presence and reaffirming our commitment to the values of Traditional Karate-Do.

The updated logo, inspired by the flame, symbolizes the living spirit of Karate-Do — the energy transmitted from master to disciple, generation after generation. It reflects our pursuit of excellence, unity, and spiritual growth, while projecting a modern and dynamic image that connects tradition with the future.

From this date onward, all official WTKF events, communications, and materials will adopt this new identity, reinforcing our vision and our motto:

“Dentō no michi, mirai e” — The path of tradition towards the future.

In light of the growth and international projection of our Federation, we are pleased to announce the renewal of our visual identity. The logo of the World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF) has evolved to more deeply reflect the values and vision that guide our path.

The new logo, by contrast, incorporates a stylized flame design. This change is not only aesthetic but also symbolic:

The flame represents the living spirit of Karate-Do, the energy transmitted from master to disciple, generation after generation.

The upward movement reflects the constant pursuit of self-improvement, growth, and spiritual elevation that characterizes the path of Traditional Karate-Do.

The circle surrounding the flame preserves the notion of unity and universality, showing that although cultures and countries may differ, we all share the same spirit.

This redesign responds to the need to project a more modern and dynamic image, without losing our connection to our roots and traditions. The flame of Traditional Karate-Do symbolizes strength, passion, and commitment to the values that define us: respect, discipline, perseverance, and peace.

The Czech Alliance of Traditional Karate-Do (CTKA) is honored to host an international seminar with one of the leading figures in Traditional Karate-Do:

This seminar represents an exceptional opportunity to experience in depth the training method proposed by Sensei Nelson Carrión, designed to address daily practice in the dōjō and to transmit Karate-Do to students of all ages through a simple yet highly effective short-term methodology.

Throughout the event, Sensei Carrión will explain how to train Kata, Kihon, and Kumite, with special emphasis on the use of traditional striking implements such as the makiwara, pads, and heavy bag. These tools are essential for practitioners to understand the importance of applying pressure against the ground when striking, combined with proper exhalation and focusing power toward the center.

In addition, he will address the correct use of body dynamics and proper posture, both of which are fundamental to authentic and effective Karate-Do.

Ultimately, this is a unique opportunity to train with a master who has dedicated his life to preserving and spreading the spirit of Traditional Karate-Do worldwide.

Shirai Hiroshi Sensei has passed away

Shirai Hiroshi Sensei, has passed away

Hiroshi Shirai was a renowned Japanese Shotokan karate master, born on July 31, 1937, in Nagasaki, Japan. He began practicing karate in 1956 and quickly gained recognition for his skill. In 1962, he won both kata and kumite championships of the Japan Karate Association (JKA), earning the title of "Grand Champion." Shirai was deeply influenced by prominent figures in karate such as Masatoshi Nakayama and Hidetaka Nishiyama.

In 1965, Shirai moved to Milan, Italy, where he played a crucial role in promoting and teaching Shotokan karate across Europe. He is known for emphasizing the self-defense aspect of karate, which he called "Goshindo." In 2011, he was awarded the 10th dan by the Italian Traditional Karate Association (FIKTA), further solidifying his legacy.

Shirai passed away yersterday, Oct, 9 - 2024, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as one of the most influential karate masters in modern history.

On behalf of the Tournament Organizing Committee and the All-Russian Traditional Karate Federation we are proud and honoured to invite all WTKF members to take part in The Fifth International Traditional Karate-Do Tournament “Kumite Evolution Cup” that will be held April 27-28, 2024, in Irkutsk (Russia). A special feature of the tournament are the competition rules for children and amateurs under the 1st Dan.

We named these rules the Global Educational and Competitive Standard (GECS) and have been improving them over the past 10 years. We will be happy to share our experience of using this comprehensive educational and competitive system, which is a careful adaptation of the ITKF rules of competition designed for this technical level of students.

V International Traditional Karate-Do Tournament Irkutsk 2024

I. General Information

Title: V International Traditional Karate-Do Tournament “KUMITE EVOLUTION CUP” Sanctioned by: World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF) Hosted by: All-Russian Traditional Karate Federation (All-RTKF) Tournament venue: Baikal Arena Baikalskaya 267 I, Irkutsk (Russia)

II. Participants

All athletes that are selected by the respective WTKF National Federations to compete as well as organizations invited by the All-RTKF, must meet the following conditions:

Age in agreement with their competition category.
They must know, fully understand and be able to compete in accordance with the WTKF competition rules.
They must be free of any physical or mental handicap that might cause a breach of the WTKF rules.
All KUMITE, KO-GO and FUKU-GO athletes are obliged to have mouth (tooth) guards (breast-protection for women, groin protector for men are optional, but recommended safety equipment).
They must have his / her own international travelling insurance and also personal accident insurance.
They must belong to a National Federation that is a full member of the WTKF or have a special invitation from the Tournament Organizer.
They must provide a medical certificate and international medical insurance in case of emergency medical care.
All countries must bring national flags

IV. Categories

On the second day of the event (April 28, 2024) there will be the Fifth International “Kumite Evolution Cup”. Each national team (one team for country, Russia has two) is to be composed of 3+1 athletes (male) who will compete in Shobu-Ippon Kumite.

T.O.C. has a right to make changes in additions of the tournament program, including unification or cancellation of disciplines and categories.

On the first day of the event (April 27, 2024) there will be competition in the following categories (*) :

(*) Some of competition categories can be postponed by the T.O.C. to the second day of competition.

All categories are divided into 4 technical levels in accordance with the All-RTKF standard up to 7th kyu, inclusive (beginners), 6-4 kyu (intermediate), 3-1 kyu (high) and 1 st dan and above (master level).

In categories 1st dan and above, starting from the year of birth 2010 and older (cadets juniors, etc.), competitions are held according to the rules of WTKF/ITKF. At each of the three technical levels (beginner/intermediate/higher) from the white belt to the brown (1 kyu inclusive), the competition rules developed by the Institute of Traditional Karate of Russia for each of these technical levels, both in individual and team disciplines, apply. Take a look at the Global Educational and Competitive Standard of the All-RTKF (GECS) in the edition of 2024. See The Appendix № 6.

We kindly ask all National Federations to complete all registration of their Officials, Athletes, Coaches and Judges by April 7, 2024 (preliminary application).

By April 14, 2024 a final version of application is to be sent. Online registration of athletes is already open.

C. Participation Fees

50 Euro for athlete (only one fee, and athlete can participate in all competitions). Registration fees for all Athletes are to be paid to the T.O.C. at the Tournament Office at latest one day before competition (until April 26, 2024, Friday).

Participation fee in International Traditional Karate-Do seminar for judges conducted by Sensei Pavel Chernousov (6 th Dan, All-RTKF President) is 10 Euro.

VI. Judges

Selection of the Judges will be made by the Organizing Committee. Each judge candidate must submit the application form by April 14, 2024. All Judges must bring their own HAKAMA (black), whistle and clean KARATEGI.

Mandatory Athletes check in . The check in should be done by coach of every National Federations.

The check in is from 12 noon to 5:30 pm.

All Pan American draw and chart’s must be done on Tuesday night 10/3 and a copy be made for Sensei Tabassi review by no later than noon Wednesday 10/4.

The final package must be ready for Sensei Tabassi by the time of General assembly at 3:30 pm on Thursday 10/5. Need 3 copies of the final package on Thursday 10/5 at 3:30 pm.

Wednesday October, 4:

8:30 am to 11:30 am and 1 pm to 4 pm mandatory judging seminar. 4 pm to 5 pm mandatory coaches Seminar. 11:30 to 1 pm Board of directors meeting. Lunch should be provided for the Board members.

Thursday October, 5:

Start conditions for competitors:

Suitable age: according to the age groups mentioned.
Appropriate grade.
Protectors: Mouth guard is obligatory for all groups starting from Jiyu Ippon KUMITE. Obligatory crotch protectors for boys and chest protectors for girls from group D, whereby protectors must be put on regardless of the applicable attire - karate-gi. Competitors without the required protectors will not be allowed to start.
Safety of starters Each competitor taking part in the KUMITE competition must not wear: • long fingernails and toenails must be cut short, otherwise the competitor will not be allowed to start in the KUMITE competition, • rings, chains, earrings, glasses, watches, hairpins and hairpins (or other hard objects pinned in the hair), orthoses (or other hard stiffeners for limbs or parts of the body, in addition to medical board-approved competitions).
Payment of the starting fee
Signing by the manager of the team / club of the declaration of the competition organizer that competitors have accident insurance, up-to-date medical examinations, consent to publicize the image, GDPR and Covid statement.

Sanctioned by: World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF)

Organized by: Confederação de Karate-Dô Tradicional Brasileira - CKTB: It will be held in Natal - Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil) .

Location of the event: Nélio Dias multi-sport gym; Address: Av. Guararapes, s/n - Lagoa Azul, Natal - RN, 59020-030 .

PARTICIPANTS

All athletes that are selected by the respective WTKF National Federations to compete must fulfil the following conditions:

They must have the WTKF registered black belt (Shodan or higher) – registration number. This applies to age categories – seniors, youth, juniors and cadets.
Age in agreement with their competition category.
They must know, fully understand and be able to compete in accordance with the WTKF competition rules.
They must be free of any physical or mental handicap that might cause a breach of the WTKF rules.
All KUMITE, KO-GO and FUKU-GO athletes are obliged to have mouth (tooth) guards (breast-protection for women, groin protector for men are optional, but recommended safety equipment).
They must have his/her own international traveling insurance and also personal accident insurance issued by their respective National Federations.
They must belong to a National Federation which is a full and paid member of the WTKF including the year 2022.
They must present Medical Release and International Health Insurance to Medical Emergencies.
All countries must bring two national flags.

In the categories (Black belt): up to 14 - 15 years old will not be able to perform attacks on the "Jodan" face.

In the categories : 16 - 17 years and above , there may be attacks on the following criteria established by WTKF rules, only being allowed attacks towards "2 cm" of the "Jodan" face.

KATA (Individual-Colored (as) )

In categories up to 5 years, 6 - 7 years; 8 - 9 years; 10 - 11 years; 12 - 13 years; 14 - 15 years; 16 - 17 years; 18 - 20 years; 21 - 44 years; 45 - 54 years; 55 - 64 and above.

In the contests up to 9 years, 10 - 11 years the Kata will be free choice of the athlete;

In categories Individual Kata disputes in categories 12 - 13 years, 14 - 15 years, 16 - 17 years, 18 - 20 years; 21 - 44 years; 45 - 54 years; 55 - 64 and above (up to orange, green, purple) and adult dangai (brown), kata of free choice for the final, will be signaled by the flag system until 4 athletes remain; and in the final, Freedom of choice (Note systems).

KATA ( Individual-Black Belts )

In the categories (Black Belts) the qualifiers will be by flag, remaining 8 athletes. Kata of free choice for the semifinal and final (grades), passing 4 athletes to the final. You cannot repeat the semifinal Kata in the final;

In the case of a tie in the Kata mode in any category, for the tiebreaker criteria, all the notes are added, with the cut ones. If there is still a tie, the referee will choose a Heian Series Karate or Tekki-Shodan, held simultaneously by both athletes and will be given hantei .

WARNING:

When starting the competition of a category the competitors should be attentive, the coach should be attentive to the initial conference, and the coach of their athletes, mainly as smaller categories. After the initial conference, the called athlete will have one minute of presentation in the competition area. Not performing, the athlete, will receive kiken (quitting), unless will be competing in another area;

If the technician observes an irregularity that harmed his athlete, he will have the right to make a complaint through a written protest and must present himself to the Kansa da Área (Kata and kumite), or to the Director of Arbitration or Assistant of the Director of Arbitration, which will follow the procedures set out in the Competition Rules;

Participants are children who practice Karate-Do and respect the competition rules (Cup) based on the WTKF Competition Rules.
There are no limits of participating athletes/teams from one country/clubs.

All countries must bring two flags, their national anthem.

2022 Events

To all WTKF National Federations,

Dear members,

I would like to inform due of the Covid worldwide our international activities were canceled since 2020.

Our 2020 World Championship in Brazil was cancelled and other activities as well.

I am in constantly contact with our executive board to make solution in this matter for the benefit of all of you.

You need to be active specially in our own country, motivate people to continue their practice and, we know, you are doing your best to solve this situation.

We are really proud for the effort that each National Federation is doing; please if you have any information for 2022 in reference of your activities do not hesitate to contact me.

Brazil is ready to set the next World Championship 2022, always will depend of the health international situation.

Be safe, keep always your strong hope and spirit.

Polish Traditional Karate Championships - Wroclaw

On June 12, 2021, the Polish Traditional Karate Championships will be held in Wrocław in the following categories: junior, youth, senior and veteran.

The organizer of the competition is: Polish Traditional Karate Union and the Traditional Karate Club KOBU Wrocław Association.

Clubs register their players for the championship via the PUKT system.

NOTE: The deadline for applications is 3 days before the competition, ie 09 June 2021. After this date, applications will not be accepted.

Dolnośląska Akademia Karate in Wroclaw affiliated would like to invite all contestants from traditional karate clubs, both Polish and international, for the 14 ^th annual tournament “Wratislavia Cup 2021”. The tournament is under the patronage of World Traditional Karate-do Federation.

Wratislavia Cup 2021 continues our pioneer project in giving children, youth end adults the opportunity to develop their skills and compete in an international karate competition. Our aim is to create an annual international event for children,youth end adults that would be the equivalent to championships in other countries. This will give us the opportunity to develop young karate contestants’ skills and accustom them to participating, not only in national tournaments, but among the fiercest international rivalries.

Dear WTKF Members:

I would like to wish you all a very happy holiday season and a healthy, happy, and prosperous New Year.

2020 was a challenging year for the entire world. Covid-19 has caused cancellations, separation, economic disasters and also loss of lives. Our Traditional Karate training has helped us immensely during this hard time. We have tried to overcome the situation, think outside of the box, find new ways to communicate, and continue to share our knowledge.

The bright side of Covid-19 is the time it has allowed us to spend more time with our families .

At WTKF we have been busy offering several online classes, reviving the WTKF Dan Certificates, pursuing legal action against the Fake WTKF, and welcoming new National Federations of Czech Republic, Lithuania and Romania, with Ukraine in the process of

joining us as well.

We are planning a full year of seminars, Gasshuku, and championships pending the application of Covid-19 vaccine. The light is at the end of the tunnel and we hope that we can get together in person in the near future.

After the damage caused by the Fake WTKF, our organization has been growing steadily and strongly. While some like to claim that they are following Nishiyama Traditional Karate, we at the WTKF, are the ones who are doing it and spreading it.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our members for their continuous support of WTKF. With your help, we will make WTKF the center for Traditional Karate and the most successful organization.

Several important news

All WTKF Members,

We hope you are doing well and staying healthy during these crazy times. We are looking forward to the day when we have overcome Covid-19 and can gather together at seminars, camps, and championships.

We have several pieces of news to share with you.

First, it is our great pleasure to announce that our organization, the WTKF, is strong and steadfastly growing. As examples, the Polska Unia Karate Tradycyjnego was created a few months ago and under the leadership of Pawel Janus and Lukasz Wojcik, it has become strong and active. This organization has already held several events including Gasshuku at Dojo Stara Weiss, with guest instructor Sensei Kwiecinski.

Another new organization, the Czech Traditional Karate-Do Alliance located in the Czech Republic, has recently joined us. It is headed by Dr. Peter Skryja who is a former student of Sensei Nishiyama and a pioneer of Traditional Karate in Czech Republic since the 1990s. His new organization is also strong and cohesive, with great athletes and seekers of the Traditional Karate-do path.

Other organizations located in Lithuania, Romania, and Ukraine are also in the process of joining WTKF.

Our second news is in regard to the World Championship to be held in Joaopessoa, Brazil after having defeated the Covid-19 pandemic. The Brazilian organization is working hard to make this Championship a memorable event for all athletes, judges, and participants.

Third, our new Dan registration will resume in October 2020 after making some small changes and adding the WTKF president’s signature. This change is necessary in order to differentiate from the Dan certificates that were stolen by the small group of usurpers of Fake WTKF. Please make sure to register everyone’s Dan ranking and to pay the yearly membership fee since the organization cannot operate without proper funding.

Since its inception in October 2014, our organization and office in Switzerland has been strong and solidifies our headquarter office in the country.

Fourth, our legal action against the small group of usurpers of Fake WTKF, is on-going and we will not stop until all our rights and belongings are returned to us.

Finally, we are so happy to announce a new member of Sensei Kwiecinski’s family, Michal Witold Kwiecinski who was born in August 2020. He has brought immense joy to the Kwiecinski family, friends, and students. We look forward to meeting Michal in one of our events in the near future.

As you can see, Covid-19 has not stopped our progress and we are continuing to grow and enhance our technical, mental, and spiritual ability on a daily basis. You will receive our 2021 Schedule of Events by the end of this year.

We wish you all great health, love, and prosperity. And we thank you for your continued commitment to Traditional Karate-Do, WTKF, and its officers and instructors.

Witold Kwieciński, 1985 - 2018

May 31st will be the second year of the tragic accident of Witold Kwieciński (Witek). On behalf of all our WTKF members we would like to express our gratitude for the hard job. All Witek did was for the benefit of our Federation, working as a designed, photograph, IT, logistics, creativity and his love for the Traditional Karate-Do.

He was the mentor and designer of our web site and many other positive things with a very smart vision for the World Traditional Karate-Do Federation future.

Official statement by the organizers of the international tournament

Dear friends and colleagues!

Due to the unstable epidemiological situation in the world and in Russia and on the recommendation of the WTKF governing authorities we have to postpone our tournament, which was planned for April 16th / 19th, to a later date. Supposedly, autumn. We make this decision primarily for the safety of the children, the most numerous participating in this tournament. We ask you not to buy tickets to Irkutsk, to hand over tickets to those who have already bought them, and not to book hotels. And, most importantly, treat this circumstance beyond our control with understanding.

We also inform you that in the near future we will publish information about the first online tournament in traditional karate-do, which will be for all a response to the current situation, as well as an interesting competitive experience. We wish you and your families good health!

Dear Mr. Kasperkiewicz,

On behalf of the World Traditional Karate-Do Federation congratulations to the organizing committee if the Wratislavia Cup 2020 at the city of Wroclaw.

The level of competition was very high, and the participation of all judges and administrative staff made the event very successful , all was set in proper time. Board of the Polish Union of Traditional Karate ( https://pukt.pl /) (WTKF Member) were there to support the competition:

Mr. Pawel Janusz (president), Mr. Lukasz Wojcik (1º vice-president) Ms. Anna Kulczyńska (member of the board), thank you all of them for their support. Mr. Andrezj Rózycky and Mr. Milton Chanes of the WTKF Marketing Department were there also to cooperate with the organization, many thanks to them too.

Participants from Russia, Brazil and Uruguay were also shearing their experience during the competition.

Sensei Pawel Chernousov from Russia was in charge of the judges with a big support of Sensei Anna Kulczynska to set all competition areas.

Fee per participant covers accommodation, food, Wrocław Zoo, trip our city (Optional).

400 PLN (95 euros) - 3 days Friday to Sunday
300 PLN (70 euros) - 2 days Saturday to Sunday

In one of this option, the organizer covers the costs of stay for a trainer and a referee from a particular representation.

Participation Fee for Athletes:

80 PLN (20 euros) per athlete competing in a single competition
100 PLN (25 euros) per athlete competing in two categories
50 PLN (13 euros) team kata

(*) Prices in euros are shown for guidance. Remember that in Poland the "Złoty" is used as the local currency, represented as PLN.

Registration fees for all Athletes who require accommodation must be paid to the T.O.C. at the Tournament Office at least by March 6, 2020, one day before the competition. Clubs arriving on the day of the competition may pay upon arrival.

Dear Friends,

Again, past year gave us all full spectrum of different energies.

World Traditional Karate-do Federation is impressed by efforts of countries which organized competitions Worldwide in the past year. We would like to thank you for your commitment to develop Traditional Karate-do Worldwide, and congratulate

on the results achieved.

Traditional Karate-do is not a sport, it’s a system of self development and self discipline. In today’s world these values are in a deficit, and we would like to turn our future into direction of spreading and making them popular.

In upcoming year Traditional Karate-do will change the development direction to put more accent on education and Budo principles which can be described in a few words: as a good behaviour, respect and ethical aspects.

Next year is going to be very exciting for all of us, because WTKF is planning to implement new operational system to our competition rules.

We wish you all great successes, good health and strong spirit for the upcoming 2020.

Dear members,

On behalf of the World Traditional Karate-Do Federation I would like to express all my gratitude for supporting our board during the last General Assembly held in Mexico on October 24th; where we confirmed our determination to continue with a

constitutional WTKF structure.

To protect our organization we started a legal procedure to stop usurpers.

Dear Members of World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF),

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF), I would like to clarify and inform you of five important information .

First , WTKF the 34th WTKF European Traditional Karate Do Championship in Odintsovo (Moscow region), will be held from October 7th, 2019 to October 13th , 2019. It is a highly anticipated event!

Second , the name “World Traditional Karate-Do Federation” and its logo were created by us. Additionally, WTKF was registered as an NGO in Geneva, Switzerland well before we applied for trademark. We have worked tirelessly to promote, improve and create

an environment where all our members can grow and have fun doing so.

Third , the WTKF Board of Directors and I have fiduciary responsibility which, first and foremost, is to protect our members by protecting our organization from any piracy or harmful actions by anyone who tries to hurt WTKF, its members and its mission.

All decisions made by WTKF Board of Directors and I are in line with our fiduciary responsibilities, are fair and in legal manner, and they are fully enforceable.

A few members have chosen to dismiss our rules and regulations and place their own benefit above the welfare of the WTKF. The Board of Directors and I had no other choice than to suspend these individuals and their respective federations after numerous attempts to contact them and resolve the situation. Our attempts were ignored by these individuals – instead they chose to organize an invalid and illegal General Assembly and have spread fake information and lies about the WTKF, its events, and its Board of Directors.

WTKF is a strong organization with numerous strong member federations. A small group (7 countries) of ill-intentioned individuals cannot and will not be able to change the commitment of the vast majority (more than 20 countries) of our members to the WTKF organization, its Board of Directors and its Constitution.

Fourth , based on WTKF Constitution and our past practices, a General Assembly is scheduled in Mexico with conjunction of the Pan American Championships on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 2 pm. This is the real, legal and valid General Assembly and not the one advertised by Mr. Radek Janus.

Any information you receive from the Fake WTKF run by Mr. Radek Janus and his few accomplices such as Mr. Savchenko, Mr. Giedrius Dranevicius and Mr. Moshe Rokah should be ignored and disregarded. The following Website and Facebook addresses

I first visited Russia many years ago, when I was a very young man. It was Novosibirsk, Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama (1928–2008) came for one of his first seminars in Russia. After WTKF was established in 2013 I was lucky to visit Russia many times. The geography of my seminars includes Moscow, Irkutsk, Sochi and of course Odintsovo where I share my experience and knowledge of Traditional Karate Do. I really like Russia, its people and its language, which sounds to me like music.

It is a pleasure to see that in just five years All-RTKF has gone a long way in the development of educational component of Traditional Karate Do. I’m really happy to see that the leaders of All-RTKF deeply understand and promote this important aspect of Traditional Karate Do, its impact on personal development. The best proof of this successful promotion is the organization of III International Budo-Conference during the European Championship WTKF.

I cannot ignore the fact that 34 European Championship in Russia will be held against the background of crisis processes within the federation, the governing of which is my responsibility. The political intrigues of some national leaders have led to the fact that on this holiday of traditional karate-do we will miss some of the best and most numerous European teams. I am grateful to All-RTKF, its President Mr. Pavel Chernousov, as well as all the presidents of national federations-members of WTKF, who remained true to the principles of Budo in this difficult situation and with honor stood the test of strength. I am sure this will be the beginning of a new stage in the history of WTKF, where we are waiting for impressive successes.

I congratulate Russian karatekas on the high achievements in the development of healthy lifestyle culture and health improvement of Russians and wish them further success in spreading Traditional Karate Do in their country.

The Tradition continues...

Dear friends!

I’m really happy that the European Championship in Russia will finally take place. From the very beginning I was heart and hand for organizing this prestigious event in Russia. First, I was really impressed with how international tournaments “Kumite Evolution” in Irkutsk have been organized for the last three years. Second, I appreciate a lot the efforts All-Russian Traditional Karate Federation has made in the field of education.

Many years ago, I was commissioned by Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama (1928–2008) to create an institute in order to protect and develop the unique legacy of traditional karate-do he passed on to us. Some time had to pass away. In 2012 the project finally came to existence and it was Sensei Pavel Chernousov and the federation he is in charge of who set about the most energetically. Already in 2019 I was awarding the first graduates in Irkutsk with state-recognized diplomas. That’s how things should be done!

The General Educational and Competition Standard (GECS) to be introduced at the international level for the first time is a visible product of this hard work and vivid cooperation. It’s a well-thought-out methodology of upbringing of a personality through the traditional karate-do practice, the way that doesn’t choose for gifted and ordinary but an effective tool for everyone. I’m really proud of my Russian colleagues who have managed such an ambitious project.

Finally, I’d like to express my deep gratitude to scholars who will deliver presentations during III International Budo-Conference “Education of personality and self-development: martial arts traditions and contemporary science”. We live in the century of science when every idea and decision has to be scientifically proven. I hope we will receive new and profound evidence for the positive influence of traditional martial arts on the growth of personality everyone among us knows from experience.

Dear WTKF Board of Directors and all who may concern,

We request, as Vice President of WTKF for Latin America and President of CKTB that some providence may be taken as to the dual directions going on at WTKF. WTKF members organizing events and posting on the previous WTKF website and social networks as WTKF sponsored events, although organized without the permission of the board of directors and of the president of our organization. We cannot allow this to happen again, because this is weakening WTKF as a reputable and transparent institution.

We have received questionings from athletes, directors, representatives of the various states of Brazil's Traditional Karate and people from other federations about events that are announced without us even knowing anything or been informed about it. We do request, due to the above facts, that urgent judicial action is taken, as well as punishment or expulsion of the members causing these inconveniences, and weakening WTKF.

All of these events have been endorsed by World Budo Karate Association, European Traditional Karate Federation, Polish Traditional Karate Federation and signed by Andrzej Maciejewski, the President of Polish Traditional Karate Federation, as it can be seen available online on the site:

We realize that WTKF name is being used to promote other entities and even particular people which is not in line with the principles of our entity, which is to promote Traditional Karate rather than particular people or personal interests.

We reaffirm our support to the WTKF president, as reported in an open letter sent on 04/3/2018. We are aware these conflicts of interests could harm WTKF reputation. Our intention was and always will be to watch over the name and growth of WTKF and Traditional Karate in Brazil, Latin America and the World.

FWD: decisions of meeting in Prague

Dear colleagues!

You received the minutes of the meeting held in Prague on 28th September which was designated by the organizers as an extraordinary General Assembly of members and a letter signed by Mr. Savchenko naming himself a new WTKF President.

This document contains a decision to transfer XXXIV WTKF European Championship to Brno, Czech Republic. It also contains accusation against Russia (All-Russian Traditional Karate Federation) of destabilizing the situation around the tournament. We regard the aforementioned accusation as an insulting towards All-RTKF, the decision to transfer the Championship unsubstantiated and we consider it necessary to explain our view of the ongoing situation.

First of all, during all this period of conflict between the WTKF Board of Directors and national federations of the Ukraine, Czech Republic, Poland and Lithuania All-Russian Traditional Karate Federation behaved in full accordance with the decisions of WTKF Board of Directors.

Understanding the complexity of situation, we couldn’t allow ourselves to take any decision without the WTKF Board of Directors approval. As a national member, we had no any other legitimate source of authority to get the approval from. We could not act in accordance with the demands of any national federations, doesn’t matter how substantiated they were. Until rejected by a legitimate General Assembly or proven unlawful through the court, the decisions of the WTKF Board of Directors stay valid and mandatory to all national members.

Thus, we couldn’t issue official letters of invitation to the national federations suspended by the decision of the WTKF Board of Directors. As a host of the European Championship we were deeply concerned with the situation and really interested in solving the problem. We officially addressed the Board of Directors with a request to allow those athletes and judges from the suspended federations who hadn’t been suspended personally to take part in the European Championship. The WTKF Board of Directors issued a letter with the requirements to the suspended federations to be fulfilled in order to allow the majority of their members to participate. The suspended federations refused to fulfil.

As for inviting all other European national federations, the usual procedure is to publish the official documents of the tournament on the WTKF web-site that was done in due time. We hadn’t received application or a request for letter of invitations from any European national federation except for Armenia, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic and the UK. We regard the situation as a boycott as not only suspended but also many other European national federations did nothing to inform us about their decision to take part. That and not the inviting of Asian states or Donetsk People’s Republic (please, read below) was and stays the strongest threat to the status of the tournament and the image of WTKF.

We received quite often questions whether the Championship will or will not take place (far before the meeting in Prague). Somebody was eager to bring rumors even to Russia that the Championship will not happen. That was a real process of destabilizing. A really strange coincidence that finally some people made a decision to cancel the Championship in Russia. Mr. Radek Janus showed us his deep concern asking how many countries will participate, being absolutely aware of the situation.

Now we can see rather clear, what for. Having this in mind, one cannot be surprised that the meeting in Prague, many federations, we think, have been waiting the results of, was planned for the end of September in order to make nearly impossible to get visas for those federations who finally saw that the meeting was nothing but personal conversation of some people.

The organizers of the meeting in Prague also stress Russia refused to negotiate on this troubled issued. This very statement is a total falsehood. We communicated with Mr. Radek Janus and Mr. Giedrius Dranevicius through the e-mail and phone. We couldn’t and didn’t want to visit the meetings during Gasshuku in August and the meeting in Prague as they were not authorized by the WTKF Board of Directors and also we could not get visas on time. We willingly refused to take part in the meeting held in Prague, as the majority of national federations did, in order not to help the organizers to fulfill the requirement of the WTKF Statute to have one third of active members present.

The minutes issued by the meeting in Prague also contain an accusation of inviting non-European and non-existing countries as it violates the status of European Championship. First, the “nonexisting states” will not participate in the Championship as countries, although the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republic had already took part in numerous Russian and some international tournaments under their flags. We kindly ask our colleagues to pay attention to the fact, that Donetsk People’s Republic team have already taken part in IJKA World Open Shotokan Championship, World Combat Sambo Federation (WCSF) and Open Asian Cup in Koshiki karate. At least seven sports federations of Donetsk People’s Republic got the official opportunity to take part in European and World Champiopnships. The decision to invite the representatives of Luhansk and Donetsk People Republic’s was taken in accordance with the position of WTKF towards the ongoing political conflicts all around the world sincerely expressed during the Children for Peace World Cup (Geneva, 2014). The athletes will participate in the European Championship as members of All-RTKF and Russian Fudokan teams. Mr. Savchenko states the Ukraine will not be able to take part in the tournament of Russia because of Donetsk People’s Republic participation. That’s the second big falsehood as there exists an official decision by the Ukrainian Ministry of Youth and Sports prohibiting the Ukrainian athletes to take part in any competitions organized in Russia.

Second, we’d like to inform that the decision to invite Asian countries was approved by the WTKF Board of Directors and published on the official WTKF web-site and we didn’t receive any claims against it until four European federations were suspended. We also we’d like to mention that national federations of Armenia and Israel being not located in Europe are respected and active members and have been taking part in ITKF / WTKF European Championships for a long time. Not to be forgotten, there hasn’t been any time WTKF Asian Championship, thus the Asian countries cannot annually take part in WTKF international tournaments unless being invited to the European Championship. By the way, we’d like to ask our respected colleagues, whether participation of Kazakhstan, Georgia, Cyprus, Turkey and Azerbajdzhan in European UEFA Championship 2016 and 2020 violated and will violate international rules, for which our colleagues are so deeply concerned.

We’d also like to ask whether the European Cup organized by our respected colleagues in Poland in 2018 was not deteriorating the image of WTKF when the Polish athletes contained more than a half of 16 participants. We cannot also skip the statement made by Mr. Maciejewski that he and his colleagues are eager to support international tournaments mentioning International Tournament “Kumite Evolution” in Irkutsk as an example. We would like to kindly remind our colleagues that already three times they had an opportunity to express their solidarity and support to this event. For the first time only a team of Polish athletes came thanks to our President Mr. Kwiecinski, for the second we had only Serbia (thanks to Irkutsk relations with Fudokan) and Mongolia (also without any influence by the side of our European colleagues) and for the third time only Serbia was present. Based on that, we have no choice but to consider the statement in question as a good example of the way the respected colleagues build their policy.

Actually, the decision to transfer the Championship to Czech Republic besides all the proves and accusations has a mathematically beautiful explanation. Polish and Czech national federations are going to lose thousands of dollars to be paid by the Sports Ministries in case they don’t take part in the Championship to be held in Russia. And they will not. The Ukraine cannot participate according to the Ukrainian law because of the political situation. And, the last but not least, Lithuania governing alongside with Czech the World Budo Karate Association has a good, sorry to say, financial reason to unite European Championship with 2nd WBKA World Children Cup (an event that by itself had to diminish the number or participants in Russia).

To conclude, we affirm that the decisions made by the meeting in Prague are nothing but a personal communication as the requirement of one third active members to be present was not fulfilled.

Especially the decision to transfer the Championship to Czech is unlawful, unsubstantiated and is an insulting to All-RTKF. None of the reasons mentioned by in documents we discussed is sufficient. We also want to express our deep gratitude and respect to all those national leaders who refused to take part in the meeting held in Prague understanding the real goals and possible aftermaths of this event. We will do our best to help those national federations who now can decide to take part in the only legitimate European Championship to be held in Russia to get visas in due time, it is still possible. Let’s be strong and honest, that is what we are taught by our martial art and the leader being in head of us.

Sensei Robert Fusaro passed away this June 29th, 2019.

Our dear Sensei Robert Fusaro passed away this June 29th 2019. To his family, students, friends and the WTKF countries all our condolences.

Rest in Peace

All our respect to this wonderful person and great karateka.

Fusaro Sensei is one of the highest ranking non-Japanese black belts in the world at 9th Dan (Degree).

He began his study of Karate-do in 1955 while stationed in Japan during the Korean War. On his first visit to a Karate class at the Japan Karate Association honbu dojo (headquarters), he met Mr. Takagi and the understanding Mr. Ito, who personally sponsored Fusaro during his extended stay in Japan after being discharged. He joined the dojo and participated in the first Japan Karate Association (JKA) tournament held in 1957. While rising through the ranks, he received instruction from members of the famed JKA Instructors' School including Senseis Kanazawa, Mikami, Mori, Kisaka, and Enoeda, among others.

To all national federations, members of WTKF

On behalf of the organizing Committee of the 34 Traditional Karate-Do European Championship WTKF 2019 I would like to inform you that All-RTKF is a host of three international events:

34 Traditional Karate-Do European Championship WTKF 2019;
6 Children’s European Cup and 1 Amateur European Cup WTKF 2019;
III International Budo-Conference "Education of personality and self-development: martial arts traditions and contemporary science".

Participation in each of these events will be not only honorable, but also really useful for all national organizations, members of WTKF. For the first time in WTKF history there will be kumite competitions among children, as well as competition among adolescents and adults without black belts. These tournaments will be held according to a special system (Global Educational and Competition Standard – GECS) based not on age but on the technical level of the athlete.

This system has already yielded excellent results in our country – increasing safety and motivation of little athletes, number and quality of participants' performance. We have every reason to believe that after the 34 European Championship GECS can be used not only for European, but also for world tournaments. Therefore, we consider it necessary to invite to participate in these events all WTKF members who want to get acquainted with GECS and take part in judicial seminars and judging practice.

Responding to the requests of Asian national federations to participate in our events, we received the approval of the WTKF governing authorities to make the 34 WTKF European Championship open to Asian countries. We are confident that this act of good-will will serve to change the situation in the development and spreading of traditional karate-do on the Eurasian continent and will create conditions for further unification of Asian countries into a single structure within the WTKF.

I hope for the understanding from the side of all the heads of national federations-members of WTKF. We are waiting for you! The organizing Committee is working hard to organize all the events at very high level.

SEASON’S GREETINGS AND 2019 PLANS

Dear Friends,

Passed year gave us all full spectrum of energies. We hope the New Year to be successor of 2018 efforts and become a great time for everybody of you. From deep of our hearts we wish you to stay in good health and take this as an advantage for everyday duties.

In the beginning of new year, let us introduce WTKF plans for upcoming year.

On July we plan to change a habit and organize WTKF Gashuku in USA California for the first time.

On October European Championship gonna be held in Moscow this time.

November we are planning to organize Pan-American Cup. For now we are considering two locations in Brasil and Mexico.

This years we suspended the WTKF World Cup in the present form, and we are introducing the new way of selecting participants of the World Cup.

In 2020 we are organizing the Continental Cups for North America, South America, Europe and Africa and Asia. Then we would chose Winners out of each Continental Cups for the World Cup Competition which gonna take place on 2021.

Thank you for your support and hard work for our community, we are glad to be surrounded by you!

YOSHIAKI HARADA VISIT IN DOJO STARA WIEŚ POLAND 16.12.2018

We had a special guest on December in Dojo Stara Wies during the Masterclass Course. We was honored by Yoshiaki Harada – Japanese Minster of Enviroment who was visiting Poland as a leader of Japanese presence on COP24 the Ecological Summit held in Katowice. Sensei Włodzimierz Kwieciński together with Sensei Paweł Krzywański and award winning athletes of Polish National Karate Team hosted Minister Harada visit.

Yoshiaki Harada is the Minister of Environment of Japan and Minister of State for Emergency Prevention in the case of a nuclear accident. He is in the top 20 most influential people in Japan. He has been a member of the House of Representatives for many years, he has 6th judo and he leads the club of black belts in the Japanese Parliament.

„Yoshiaki Harada is my friend, he has been supporting our activities for many years. For the first time he supported us during the 1st Budo Conference in 2007, in 2013 he supported us during the formation of WTKF, sending letters of support to the sports authorities in the world. We are happy that his tight time agenda let him visited Dojo in Stara Wieś. The effect of the visit is to start cooperation and launch a program aimed at exchanging young people from southern Japan and Poland” – said Sensei Włodzimierz Kwieciński.

In spring 2019, at the invitation of Minister Yoshiaki Harada, a delegation from Poland will go to Japan to continue work on the cooperation program.

2018 WORLD TRADITIONAL KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP & TRADITIONAL KARATE WORLD CHILDREN’S CUP

The World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF) held its World Championship and Children’s Cup on October 22-28 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. More than 31 countries and 400 athletes from around the world gathered at Mile One Arena for two days of high level competition and camaraderie. The Championship was preceded by two days of intensive judging seminar and productive general assembly meetings. The Mayor of St. John’s, Danny Breen, hosted a delightful reception for judges and officials to welcome them to his city as a show of appreciation for selecting St. John’s to be the host of this prestigious event.

Mayor Breen, other city council and parliamentary members opened the Championship finals with their remarks. The WTKF President, Włodzimierz Kwiecinski, also offered his remarks, which were followed by a remembrance for the 10-year anniversary of Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyam’s passing, as well as a special recognition for the life of Witold Kwiecinski. The opening ceremony also included a large band orchestra and demonstrations by members of the Canadian Traditional Karate Federation. This World Championship showcased the high skills of Traditional Karate practitioners from around the globe, and included live coverage by Rogers Broadcasting throughout the event. The WTKF, as a recipient of and continuing entity of the legacy set forth by the Sensei Nishiyama has carried out the mission, technical skills, and spirit set forth by him. It has improved upon these fundamentals each year, as evidenced in the progress of practitioners in this organization.

OKINAWA KARATE INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT

We are more than happy to inform that the WTKF delegation took part in the historical event – 1. Okinawa Karate International Tournament which was held on August 1 to 8, 2018 in Okinawa Karate Kaikan in Naha (Okinawa, Japan). In the tournament participated more than 1 700 athletes from 52 countries. WTKF was represented by the participants from Brazil, Italy, Peru, Poland and Uruguay.

WTKF delegation members took also part in the seminars conducted by karate Masters from Japan including: Sensei Masanobu Sakugawa, Sensei Minoru Higa, Sensei Morio Higaonna and others.

The event was very professionally managed, exiting and vigorous competition, with plenty of quality performances. The participants have spent almost one week working hard to share their knowledge and perspectives on the roots and fundamentals with the representatives of another countries.

“The competition system they used (they perform only Kata) was really interesting and similar to the system we use into our rules. (…)

The most important observation from my side is how the Okinawan people are proud of their art and try to defend against the “Sport Karate” invasion concept. We could work with them to promote this concept worldwide.” – summarised Sensei Nelson Carrion – WTKF General Secretary, participant of visit to Okinawa.

Before the tournament, Nelson Carrion – WTKF General Secretary, and Andrzej Maciejewski – WTKF Vice-president, visited Tokyo where they met with Sensei Mikio Yahara – Chief Instructor and Founder of Karatenomichi World Federation (KWF). They discussed about the future cooperation between WTKF and KWF.

“We are going forward with our relations which started 1,5 years ago in Paris and then in Malta during the KWF World Cup. Very positive future to work for education and peace with Sensei Yahara who understand our message and intentions to build a better world by the Budo philosophy and traditional karate-do training.” – said Sensei Nelson Carrion.

90. SENSEI’S BIRTHDAY – 90 JAPANESE CHERRY TREES – 90 KATA

In 2018 we have been celebrating “2018 – the year of Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama’s legacy”. It is a very special time because in this year is the 90th anniversary of Sensei Nishiyama’s birthday and the 10th anniversary of his passing away.

It is to express our respect for our teacher, one of the greatest masters of karate in the 20th century – Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama. It is thanks to him that traditional karate-do has spread in such a splendid fashion all over the world. In all we do we recall his legacy and follow tradition.

In 2018 WTKF has been organizing a plenty of traditional karate-do seminars and tournaments which are dedicated to the memory of Sensei Nishiyama. The courses and seminars are conducted by the most experienced instructors who have developed this martial arts together with Sensei Nishiyama for many years.

Traditional Karate Federation of Poland is going to organize the celebration of 90. anniversary of Sensei Nishiyama’s birthday. It will be the closing event of “2018 – the year of Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama’s legacy” in Poland. The ceremony will take place on October 10, 2018 at the Japanese Martial Arts and Sports Centre Dojo – Stara Wieś.

This event is dedicated to all traditional karate-do practitioners, but especially to people who participated in trainings conducted by Sensei Nishiyama in Central Dojo in Los Angeles and San Diego as well.

Everyone who will participate in the celebration of Sensei Nishiyama’s birthday will become the founder of 1 of 90 Japanese cherry trees, which will be planted at the Center Dojo – Stara Wieś during the ceremony. Each tree will have a name plate with the name of its founder. In addition, the participant will also take part in the special training “90 kata” (27 x Unsu, 3 x Kitei, 27 Nijushiho, 3 Kitei, 27 x Hangetsu, 3 x Kitei). During the ceremony, an auction of Witold Kwieciński’s pictures will also take place, and all proceeds from the auction will be directed to Dawid Wiśniewski – a 10-year-old karateka who fights with a malignant brain tumour. Welcome!

The WTKF Summer Camp Gasshuku 2018 took place on August 20 to 24, 2018 at the Japanese Martial Arts and Sports Centre Dojo – Stara Wies in Poland. It took place as a part of celebration of “The Year of Sensei Nishiyama’s Legacy”.

The seminar was available for all participants with 4 kyu – 1 DAN. The seminar gathered about 130 participants and was conducted by the following instructors:

This significant Championship for all Pan American Traditional Karate Do practitioners will be our last WTKF event for 2017.

Sensei Marcos Morón was one of the highest competitors of the former ITKF now WTKF, we will homage him participating in his home land

from the North of Canada until the South of Argentina, means all Pan American countries.

This is a big effort from the Asociación Peruana de Karate Tradicional with the cooperation of the Club de Regatas Lima, Mr. Guillermo DeVettori and his staff.

7th TRADITIONAL KARATE WORLD CUP

The 7th Traditional Karate World Cup 2013 took place on 15 June 2013 in the Sport Hall GLOBUS in Lublin (Poland). The 2013 World Cup was combined with a tournament for young traditional karate athletes – Traditional Karate Polish Children’s Cup.

The 2013 World Cup was dedicated to the memory of Dan Stuparu Sensei who passed away on 28 April 2013. We still feel deep grief after his sudden and unexpected passing and we cannot accept that he is no longer with us especially in view of the forthcoming World Cup. He has participated in all previous editions of the World Cup since 2001 and he was supposed to participate with the Romanian athletes in 2013 edition, too.

In the Word Cup scompetitions are set by the individual cup system. 8 players and 8 female players start in the technical events (kitei, kata) and in close combat – they must demonstrate a comprehensive technical preparation. European Cup competitions are held every two years.
